Gold Pivot Point Calculator
Where are today's XAUUSD support and resistance levels? Enter yesterday's high, low and close — get the classic pivot point plus R1–R3 and S1–S3, calculated with both the Standard and Fibonacci methods side by side.
Why two methods? Standard pivots use the full daily range for wide levels; Fibonacci pivots use 0.382/0.618 ratios for tighter levels. Both share the same pivot point. See when to use each ↓
Standard vs Fibonacci — when to use each
Both methods start from the same pivot point. They differ in how far the support/resistance levels sit from it:
Standard: uses the full daily range — R2 = PP + (H−L), R3 = H + 2×(PP−L). Wide levels, best for volatile gold days ($50+ range).
Fibonacci: uses 0.382 / 0.618 / 1.000 of the daily range. Tighter levels, best for quiet/ranging days — and they line up with Fib confluence thinking.
The practical rule: on big-range days watch the Standard R2/R3/S2/S3; on chop days the Fibonacci R1/S1 often hold first. Mark both — confluence of the two methods at nearby prices is a stronger zone.
How the calculation works
Pivot Point = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3
Standard R1 = (2 × PP) − Low · Standard S1 = (2 × PP) − High
Standard R2 = PP + (High − Low) · Standard S2 = PP − (High − Low)
Standard R3 = High + 2 × (PP − Low) · Standard S3 = Low − 2 × (PP − High)
Fibonacci R1/S1 = PP ± 0.382 × (High − Low)
Fibonacci R2/S2 = PP ± 0.618 × (High − Low)
Fibonacci R3/S3 = PP ± 1.000 × (High − Low)
Worked example
Inputs: H = 3964.62, L = 3895.57, C = 3926.81
PP: (3964.62 + 3895.57 + 3926.81) ÷ 3 = $3929.00
Standard R1: (2 × 3929.00) − 3895.57 = $3962.43 · Standard S1: (2 × 3929.00) − 3964.62 = $3893.38
Fib R1: 3929.00 + 0.382 × 69.05 = $3955.38 · Fib S1: 3929.00 − 0.382 × 69.05 = $3902.62
Assumptions & limitations
- Use your broker's daily candle. MT5 daily close time varies by broker — note which session close your H/L/C came from.
- Levels are zones, not lines. Allow $2–$5 tolerance on XAUUSD; wicks often overshoot pivots before reversing.
- Gold's wide range matters. Daily ranges of $30–$80 are normal; $150+ on volatile days — R3/S3 print more often on gold than on forex pairs.
- No live price feed. Enter H/L/C manually from your chart.
- Results are educational only — not financial advice.
How to get H/L/C from MT5
- MT5 desktop: open the XAUUSD Daily chart → hover the last completed daily candle → read High, Low, Close from the tooltip or Data Window (Ctrl+D).
- MT5 mobile: open XAUUSD daily chart → tap the last completed candle → OHLC values appear at the top.
- Always use the last completed daily candle — never the one still forming.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are pivot points in gold trading?
Pivot points are support and resistance levels derived from the previous day's high, low and close. Day traders use them as reference zones for entries, targets and stop placement on XAUUSD.
How is the pivot point calculated?
PP = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3. Example: H=3964.62, L=3895.57, C=3926.81 → PP = $3929.00. Support and resistance levels are then projected above and below this pivot.
What is the difference between Standard and Fibonacci pivots?
Standard pivots use the full daily range (wider levels — better for volatile days). Fibonacci pivots use 0.382/0.618/1.000 of the range (tighter levels — better for ranging days). Both share the same pivot point.
Which daily candle should I use for H/L/C?
Your broker's last completed daily candle. MT5 server time differs by broker, so daily candles — and therefore pivots — can vary slightly between brokers. Stay consistent with one feed.
Do pivot points work on XAUUSD?
Yes — gold respects daily pivots well because so many intraday traders watch the same levels. Treat them as zones (±$2–$5), not exact lines; wicks frequently overshoot before reversing.
What does it mean when price is above or below the pivot?
The classic read: above PP → bullish bias (look for longs toward R1/R2), below PP → bearish bias (look for shorts toward S1/S2). It is a bias filter, not a trade signal on its own.
