Gold Pip Value Calculator
What is one XAUUSD pip worth in dollars? Enter your lot size and contract — get the exact dollar value of a single pip, a per-lot pip ladder, and the answer to why some sites say $1 and others say $10.
Why do sites give two different answers? Some say one gold pip is worth $1 per lot, others say $10. Both are right — they use different pip conventions ($0.01 vs $0.10). Use the toggle below to match your broker. See the full explanation ↓
Why do some sites say $1 and others say $10?
Both answers are correct — they come from two different pip conventions used across brokers and trading communities:
$0.01 convention (standard): gold quoted to 2 decimals · 1 pip = $0.01 · 1.00 lot × 100 oz × $0.01 = $1.00 per pip
$0.10 convention: some brokers and educators call $0.10 one "pip" · 1.00 lot × 100 oz × $0.10 = $10.00 per pip
The fix: match the toggle above to your broker's quoting. When in doubt, check MT5: right-click XAUUSD → Specification → tick value. Tick value = contract size × pip size — the ground truth.
How the calculation works
Pip Value per 1.0 lot = Contract Size (oz) × Pip Size ($)
Pip Value (your size) = Lots × Contract Size (oz) × Pip Size ($)
Point Value = Pip Value ÷ Points per Pip · Points per Pip = Pip Size ÷ $0.01 (1 under the $0.01 convention, 10 under the $0.10 convention)
1 point = $0.01 always (MT5 convention) · Fractional point: $0.001 = 0.1 point
Reference Move = Pip Value × N pips
Worked examples
1.00 lot, 100 oz, $0.01: 1 × 100 × 0.01 = $1.00 per pip
1.00 lot, 100 oz, $0.10: 1 × 100 × 0.10 = $10.00 per pip
0.10 lot, 100 oz, $0.01: 0.1 × 100 × 0.01 = $0.10 per pip
1.00 lot, 10 oz mini, $0.01: 1 × 10 × 0.01 = $0.10 per pip
Assumptions & limitations
- 100 oz is a preset, not a rule. Most brokers quote XAUUSD at 100 oz per 1.0 lot, but 10 oz and 1 oz contracts exist. Check your broker's contract specification.
- Pip value does not change with the gold price. For USD-quoted XAUUSD it is fixed per lot size — only your lots, contract and convention change it.
- Spread, commission, swap and slippage are not included — your real cost per pip movement is higher.
- No live price feed. Pip value math does not need live data — enter your size manually.
- Results are educational only — not financial advice.
How to check your broker's specification
- MT5 desktop: right-click XAUUSD in Market Watch → Specification → read Contract size and Tick value. Tick value should equal contract size × your pip size.
- MT5 mobile: tap XAUUSD → Properties → contract size is listed there.
- If your tick value does not match either convention, your broker uses a custom setup — enter the contract size above as Custom and type the exact figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is 1 pip in XAUUSD?
On 2-decimal quotes — the standard on most MT5 gold feeds — 1 pip = $0.01. Some brokers and educators use a $0.10 pip convention instead. Both are conventions; match the toggle above to your broker.
How much is 1 pip worth on 1 lot of gold?
On a standard 100 oz contract: $1.00 per pip with the $0.01 convention, or $10.00 per pip with the $0.10 convention. Formula: 1 lot × 100 oz × pip size.
Why do some websites say $1 per pip and others $10?
They use different pip conventions ($0.01 vs $0.10) — neither is wrong. Flip the convention toggle on this page to see both answers instantly, then match your broker's quoting.
What is the difference between a pip and a point in gold?
A point is always $0.01 on XAUUSD (MT5 convention — the smallest quoted digit). A pip depends on your convention: with the $0.01 convention, 1 pip = 1 point; with the $0.10 convention, 1 pip = 10 points. A $0.001 move is a fractional point (0.1 point).
Does pip value change when the gold price moves?
No. For USD-quoted XAUUSD, pip value is fixed per lot size (lots × contract × pip size). The gold price itself does not appear in the formula.
How do I check my broker's contract size?
In MT5: right-click XAUUSD → Specification → Contract size. The Tick value shown there is the ground truth — it should equal contract size × pip size.
Is pip value the same on mini or micro gold accounts?
No — it scales with contract size. On a 10 oz mini contract, 1 pip ($0.01) is worth $0.10 per lot instead of $1.00. Select 10 oz or 1 oz above to see your account's values.
